Politics Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Yusang Yoon 2022/11/27 7 This year, the CCP congress marks the 20th anniversary of the CCP elections with a familiar candidate, Xi Jinping. Elected as the president of China in the year 2012 and has persisted ever since Xi Jinping now attempts to cement his sovereignty with a third try at the presidency. Experts on Chinese politics estimate that the election would go along as Xi would expect, but as some obstacles emerge as an unignorable threat to Xi's extension of power, it seems to many observers that his third regime hangs by a thread. Political instability within China is often mentioned as one of the sources of Xi's loss of authority within the CCP. One of the main sources of criticism is the implementation of the Zero COVID policy in China such as the Shanghai lockdown from February to August this year. Zero COVID policy, as it is a type of political tactic rather than an original Chinese policy, can be generally labeled as a political strategy that enacts stringent lockdowns and movement restrictions to keep cases as low as possible. On October 15th, BBC reported an anonymous protest in China condemning Xi Jinping on a highway in Beijing. Reports are assuming that the main reason behind the protest is societal frustration as a response to the harsh 'Zero COVID policy ("China Protest").' This protest had some precursors as there were various protests and demonstrations shouting for the governmental lockdown to be brought down. However, what distinguishes this protest from others is the timing. Most of the protests held in China were hardly initiated during a political election as citizens and police officers – i.e., Gong'an (公安) – are extremely cautious to avoid any troubles that might distress the government officials. The severity of the protest is also very exceptional as the plank card contained words directly expressing a sense of hatred against the Xi regime. The response from Xi Jinping, in contrast, obstinately remains still; Xi, through his official commentary through People's Daily Online (i.e, 人民日报), justified his policy as "the inevitable choice to safeguard the fundamental interests of the people." The damage of the Zero COVID policy to the Chinese economy should also be taken into account when evaluating the Xi regime. According to Wright and Kratz, the GDP per capita of China declined by 5.8 percent during the two years of the COVID epidemic. Bloomberg economic magazine acknowledges that more than 30 percent of China's economic decline is responsible for the Zero COVID policy ("China's Consumer Woes"). Even the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned of China's severe economic punishment. These charts all accumulate and attach rapidly with the outcome measurement of Xi's regime for the past two reelections as the CCP chairman. Differences can be drawn from former leaders, Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong, the CCP that Xi attempts to extend the political scope and propaganda onto an international scale. The Belt Road Initiative (BRI) manifests Xi's intention to increase China's soft power and global awareness as a leading country in Eastern Asia. Nevertheless, even the BRI blueprints are starting to smudge as countries that formerly participated in the initiative are showing discouraging results. One quintessential example can be found in Sri Lanka where BRI officials intend to build the port of Hambantota, leaving a colossal amount of debt to the Sri Lanka government and the handing of 80% joint venture of the port with the Chinese government; "Sri Lanka serves as a warning to those interested in Chinese strategic influence.” Experts believe that the Belt Road Initiative stems from a long-term desire for China to earn international acclaim as a dissatisfied state – a state who feels that its influence, status, and material benefits should be higher than what they are actually achieving. Though international acclaim and the acknowledgment of China's soft power vary from each state, the majority of actions held during the Xi regime do not appear as a pleasant outlook on Xi Jinping. Struggles of protests and demonstrations replenish every month and the new political candidate Li Keqiang - the primer of the state council - rises as a potential threat to Xi Jinping (the example of how Li presents himself as a potential threat can be found in his recent criticism against Xi Jinping's Zero COVID policy.) Xi is now in an embroiled situation where he must resolve a complex string of clashes within and beyond China to manifest his clear political strength. The third time's the charm, yet instability boils as the burdening responsibility of sustaining third consecutive career mounts as a possible engine to Xi's descension of power. Now with the election, the snowball rolls from the mountaintop of Chinese politics, and one thing is sure: Xi's actions will either move mountains of CCP or end up as a political avalanche with Xi on its bottom. - What Will Happen to Free Speech on Twitter Under Elon Musk?
Magazine Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In What Will Happen to Free Speech on Twitter Under Elon Musk? Magazine 0 Just last month, Elon Musk’s takeover of the social network company, Twitter, has summoned sheer pandemonium to all 217 million users and its 7500 employees. Soon, the company’s new CEO fired nearly 4000 employees, cutting the workforce in half. Accompanying the reduction of laborers, more changes were made; the blue verified icon no longer determined iconic figures, but rather differentiated the ones who purchased Twitter Blue from those who did not. People are questioning the underlying motivation behind Elon Musk to make the recent changes to the company. Elon Musk is aiming towards shaping the social network platform to Web 3.0–a notion that implements decentralization from “tech giants” that oversee customer activity in social media platforms. The transition from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0 additionally implies the distribution of the company’s ownership, as users would be shareholders of the company in a similar idea to NFT transactions. Hence, the incorporation of subscriptions of the blue verified symbol is leading the company toward the decentralized business model of customer-centered profit, rather than relying on tech giants that offer company-based advertisements–for instance, advertisements by Google: based on customer activity data gathered by tech giants in Web 2.0. Twitter is used to assert one’s opinion, to announce a corporation’s announcement, and as a vital communication tool for many. Little does Musk know that his recent changes to the company’s business model are obstructing the company to achieve its objective of ensuring free speech. Charging subscription fees for blue verification marks may increase the likelihood of faulty accounts, thus inflating the risk of fake news within the intranet. Companies using Twitter’s platform to assert and announce are leaving; advertisers are no longer investing in the platform. According to Media Matters for America, following Musk’s takeover, Twitter’s top hundred influencers have abandoned the platform. As the transition from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0 will dismantle Google and Apple’s opportunities to pursue monopoly over Twitter’s profit, the tech giants’ possibility of potentially banning the platform is mentioned among the experts in the field. Due to the fact that Twitter’s stock is completely purchased by Musk, other corporations that aim to transition to Web 3.0 will be affected alongside, also potentially being restricted by the tech giants. The possible risks of legal prohibition are driving the U.S. and the world away from their common goal. The 16th United Nations Sustainable Development Goal is the right to press freedom and information, a goal that the current trend in the sector clearly contradicts. As much as free speech is emphasized in the Constitution, it seems the descendants after more than two hundred years are forgetting, more or less disregarding the sheer genesis of the United States. Elon Musk, the co-founder of Tesla and SpaceX, purchased Twitter for $44 billion on October 27, 2022. Upon his acquisition of Twitter, Elon Musk announced he would cut 75% of the workforce, allow a “blue certification badge” for any individuals who would pay 8 dollars per month, and visioned Twitter to become a platform for greater freedom of speech. Therefore, the future modification of Twitter and acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk could have detrimental effects on the advertisement and promotion of future business as they pursued the agenda of the “blue certification badge”; an absolute free speech tool that can increase the spread of misinformation and abuse of credibility. Since Musk promised the freedom of speech on Twitter, there were several reports that racist comments, hate speech, and other objectionable content had significantly increased after 24 hours of his ownership. For example, according to the NCRI (Network Contagion Research Institute), the use of racial slurs - commonly the n-word - in the app has spiked nearly 500 percent. Musk has also promised to change Twitter’s current moderation policies and undo the permanent bans on controversial figures such as Donald Trump. This would target Twitter negatively when profiting off advertisements, as brands are very sensitive about the types of content where their ads are presented and they try to avoid their ads running with disputed content such as hate speech and racism. Additionally, Musk has also indicated that he wanted the platform to be less reliant on advertising even though 90% of Twitter’s revenue comes from advertising. This would result in companies reconsidering having their ads on Twitter, leading to detrimental effects on an advertisement, promotion of future businesses, and even on the revenue of Twitter. Twitter has long been a platform that provided communication through expression among not only influencers and popular individuals but also the public. However, extreme freedom can lead to harassment, hate speech, and the spread of misinformation. Upon the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, he could diversify the revenue earnings of Twitter through e-commerce such as Paypal. Furthermore, his new policies surrounding content moderation and the purchase of the blue verified badge can deter the businesses and organizations that had benefited from advertisement with potentially increased false and misleading information. Thus, the new changes surrounding Twitter can have a greater impact on society than the average Twitter user might expect. Founded in 2006, Twitter is a social media platform that allows users to freely ‘tweet’ their opinions. While their primary goal was to build connections between individuals, ever since the peak of Twitter’s popularity in 2013, governments have taken advantage of the platform as an effective communication method. Currently, 153 out of 193 UN countries have an official Twitter account. Politicians and government officials worldwide use Twitter to engage in international affairs and communicate with different nations. The term Twiplomacy (Twitter + diplomacy) defines such usage of Twitter. However, Twitter’s usage also extends to agitating the public during elections. For example, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro severely damaged his opponent’s reputation by exposing him on Twitter during the election. Consequently, Bolsonaro won the election. Regardless of how it is used, it is clear that under the support of global leaders, Twitter flourished by facilitating exchanges of thoughts between and mediated by diplomats. This tie between politics and Twitter makes the recent purchase of Twitter by the famed entrepreneur Elon Musk all the more interesting. Elon Musk has previously mentioned that Twitter is biased on politics, and does not allow political speeches. He has stated that he wishes to change Twitter so that Twitter does not censor innocent posts and prevent government interference. Regarding his purchase of Twitter, Musk promised to focus on free speech, as “Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy”. In a TED interview where Musk explained his desire to buy Twitter, Musk stated that his “strong, intuitive sense is that having a public platform that is [trusted and inclusive] is extremely important to the future of civilization,”. His choice to unblock former president Donald Trump's account to include the former president on Twitter, and his focus on removing bots from Twitter - which would make tweets on Twitter more trustworthy as a source of real opinions by real people - seems reflective of his words. Yet there are numerous changes that are still ongoing, as in Musk’s own words in a Twitter post on November 10th, “...Twitter will do lots of dumb things in the coming months. We will keep what works & change what doesn’t.”. As there are still numerous changes ongoing, to declare anything but Musk’s intentions as well-intended would be rash. Only time will tell if his good intentions will result in a good outcome for the prospect of Twitter and free speech. 2023/02/05 Share Seongmin Choi, Hyundo Jung, Jaeheon Jung, Yeongho Jeong, Gyumin Kim, Hyunseo Kim, Seun Kim, Yechan Kim, Jeongwoo Lee, Yoonseo Lim, Seoa Park Works Cited > News Magazine Robinson Review Favorites A Review of Alternative Bottleless Water Ooho Dongha Kim Three Reasons Why the U.S. Shot Down the Chinese Spy Balloon Seunghyeon Lee How Truly Significant Is the Collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank on the U.S. Economy? - Why Mark Zuckerberg Apologized in the January Senate Hearing | The Robinson Review
Weekdays, Month Day, Year 00 °c Log In Politics Why Mark Zuckerberg Apologized in the January Senate Hearing Politics -Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologizes to the victim's family at a Senate hearing on the 31st- 03/03/2024 Share Jeonghyeon Park (Kevin) CEOs of major SNS companies including Meta, X(Twitter), and TikTok were summoned to the US Senate on January 31, 2024. The members of the Senate “scolded” those tech companies leaders for online child sexual exploitation. In this hearing, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, lowered his head to apologize for the child sexual exploitation that happened in Meta (Al Jazeera, 2024). The hearing of those CEOs of major SNS companies was fully valid; some people even assess the hearing of them was too late even though there were a lot of cases of sexual assault existing in these SNS companies. Cases of sexual assault reported were astonishing since these SNSs started to receive a lot of users. In many countries, sexual assault cases, especially those targeted at teenagers and children, have become a serious social issue that all citizens focus on. For example, in South Korea, the groups of criminals operating the group chat that shares videos of sexually assaulted girls and boys were restrained and became a hot topic since some of them received a sentence of more than 40 years(조선일보, 2023). Also, X(Twitter)’s censorship policy is known to be too loose for uploading sexually provocative videos (박고은, 2023). Therefore, a lot of videos including those of sexually assaulting children are uploaded to X(Twitter) and shared and watched by users all around the world. Because of those incidents and tendencies, many people are raging at those tech companies for not actively preventing those terrible cases from happening. It became evident that those SNS companies lost their ability to " self-purify.” When a serious social issue caused by corporations is not resolved well by themselves, a national institution needs to act in order to make a change. A national institution, representatively the national assembly, has a system to accuse those who are responsible for social issues and it is totally rational to use the system to urge and scold those who are responsible. With this logic, the hearing of those leaders of SNS companies is totally valid and righteous. It is a good example that the Senate uses its power to urge. The righteous decision of the Senate to hold the hearing of those SNS company leaders is highly valid and deserves praise. The apology of Mark Zuckerberg was a good decision for the victims and his company. Many people would hope sexually assaulting videos on SNSs shouldn’t be uploaded anymore. I hope those tech companies reflect on their policies more and more. I hope that the companies will solve the problem on their own so that the Senate will not hold the hearing again. - Sustainable Methods for Managing and Using Water Resources
Economics Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Economics Sustainable Methods for Managing and Using Water Resources Economics 01/21/2024 Share Alyssa Han (Alyssa) What is the most valuable everyday item? It could be people, food, or clothing, depending on your perspectives. However, water is the most important resource for living because, without water, there is no life. People drink, wash, clean, and use it every day. Nevertheless, they do not recognize its value and often waste it. Many people around the world suffer from a shortage of water. According to the United Nations report, they stated that “By 2025, 1.8 billion people will face water scarcity.” Since water has incredible influence over the world’s population, people should promote sustainable methods to manage and use water resources properly. To preserve limited water resources, global retailers and food companies must work collectively and emphasize the importance of water preservation by volunteering in conservation efforts. People could apply collective action to the city or their neighborhood. This could make us reflect on themselves, whether they overuse water. Certain corporations are leading such change with notable actions. According to the New York Times, the California Water Action has brought companies operating in California altogether, including Nestlé Waters, to protect California’s water resources. The companies have applied collective action to its water bottling operations. For example, Nestlé Pakistan from Nestlé Waters helped to improve water quality for neighboring farmers and the community. The Sheikhupura factory has put the Nestlé Commitment to guide its water support efforts and constantly upgrade its operations to the latest standards in global technology as well. Moreover, Korea Pulmuone Waters works on preserving water by using labels that could easily get peeled off. Likewise, companies volunteering in conservatory efforts can make a notable difference in water usage. Another method people could promote is taking action by considering how much water they use each day in order to manage water resources. This could motivate people to try water conservation methods in their daily lives, eventually people collectively working on sustainable water usage. Some organizations reflected and estimated the preservation of water which was a significant action to take. According to the United Nations, the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Regional Strategic Programme Coordinator brought up this issue and discussed different kinds of ways or causes that could happen. He stated, “For food and nutritional needs, the requirement is between 2,000 and 5,000 liters per person, depending on diet, or “roughly one liter per kilo-calorie.” Also, he emphasized that to strengthen food security given that the world population is estimated to cross the nine billion mark, this could highlight the issue of water scarcity. This was also related to the sustainable goal number 6, Clean Water, and Sanitation. So they are assured to work on it by strengthening the people, community, and ecosystems. They employed large harvesting methods for agricultural purposes. Also, they strengthened governance, employed water saving with technologies, as well as useful plans, and food security which also could connect to water. Similarly, taking action by employing water savings and employing large harvesting methods as an organization could make a difference in society. Lastly, people can communicate about the cause of water shortage with people or participate in water conservation campaigns. This could make different kinds of methods that were mentioned before altogether and strive with them in reality. According to the World Economic Forum, even though a lot of people are trying different ways to solve this situation, there is a serious crisis that is going on. Water could be linked to the global climate crisis. Climate change increases inconsistency within the water cycle, causing extraordinary climate occasions, lessening the consistency of water accessibility, influencing water quality, and undermining feasible advancement and biodiversity around the world. However, they tried to solve the problem by requiring more speculation: strides in hydrological information, educating, administrating, improvement, chance appraisal, and information sharing. In conclusion, people should promote water conservation by volunteering, reflecting on their water usage, and discussing or participating in campaigns to manage water resources. In addition, they should remember, “Think Globally, Act Locally.” Every action will empower build up altogether to preserve water and form a sustainable society one day. - Itaewon Stampede: A Staggering Tragedy to South Korea
Politics Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Daniel Lee 2022/11/27 0 On October 29th, 2022, two days before Halloween, a tragic stampede in Itaewon, South Korea, traumatized the whole nation by a death toll of 156 instead of trick or treat and lighthearted entertainment. While a similar occurrence has happened before in South Korea in terms of huge casualties, none of them but the Itaewon Stampede has officially been reported as a case of a stampede. In response to this tragedy, Yoon Seok-Yeol, the president of South Korea and a member of the People Power Party (PPP), repeatedly expressed his deep condolences for the loss of young lives in Itaewon. He continuously visited the resting place of the victims with a funeral speech on each of his visits. Despite the president’s condolences, disputes ensue about the government’s responsibility, and the opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) is furiously arguing that the ruling party, PPP, has failed to prevent and deal with the stampede. A day after the stampede, October 30th, the Yoon government initiated a national condolence week for 7 days and also released explicit records of the presidential conference with the head of Central Disaster and Safety (CDS). Brief news was released after the conference with a controversial comment from the head of CDS: “There was never an excessive number of people at the moment.” This immediately ignited a new discussion emerging from citizens of whether the government truly understood the full depth and seriousness of the stampede. The official address from the DPK cited the quote with a condemning tone that the Yoon government does not quite understand the full depth of the stampede but has spent excessive time researching and examining the causation of the stampede. Eventually, at the end of the five days of national condolence week, the DPK and the citizens went skeptical about the government’s reliability. Moreover, as the media broadcast and investigation were released, it has been found in numerous cases that the government official addressed the Itaewon stampede as an “incident,” not a “tragedy”. Though “incident” is a common word applied to such events with massive casualties, it was rather peculiar to encounter the governmental response using a neutral word, “incident.” The Head Minister of Interior replied to a question related to this by explaining the diction as “neutral as possible for preparing any other cases.” The last phrase, “any other cases” outraged the nation and as political analysts even more and led to cold criticism of the government’s response. One unequivocal statement is that the government's responses to the stampede were more aloof and lukewarm than they were expected to be from the citizens, in terms of this national tragedy. It went quite evident that the citizens do not trust the government anymore, as a recent survey of 1073 citizens held by Newstomato resulted in 73.1% of the participants strongly agreeing that the government holds the most responsibility in the Itaewon stampede. Especially Daegu and Busan regions - two historically renowned regions for their adamant support for the opposition party, PPP - turned their back to the Yoon ministry as the “strong responsibility for the government” response topped with Daegu at 51.3% and Busan/Kyeongbuk region at 53.4%. Meanwhile, opposition emerged claiming that the arguments against the Yoon government are overly exaggerated and eventually vilified the ministry as a whole with misconception. Revising the statement made by the Head Minister of Interior, Lee Sang Min, in which he mentioned that “incident” is a neutral term, the claim itself is appropriate. Many other foreign media as well as major domestic media referred to the Itaewon stampede as an incident as well. Furthermore, more can be argued that the word incident is appropriate for current situations where the impact of tragedy or the full investigation has yet to be thoroughly completed. Later reports and investigations acknowledged that the Halloween festival held in Itaewon had no specific coordinator or a host who could have managed the whole situation. But instead, there was a general unconscious belief among the victims that there would be no safety risk with a serious cause of injury. This is called “apathy of safety”, which has long been established as a societal problem in contemporary South Korea, an illogical faith or belief that there are no feasible crises possible. Contrasting with adjacent countries, this safety unconsciousness in South Korea stands out in East Asia as South Koreans regard safety issues such as fire safety and tsunami alert as infinitesimal and insignificant. In conclusion, what the Itaewon Stampede has taught us is not merely an issue of how the Yoon government is malfunctioning but to understand and develop our nation with a sustainable, conscious mindset on dealing with safety issues. Even now, a political debate regarding the Itaewon Stampede leads into a deep rabbit hole of a political “blame game” between the ruling party and the opposition party. What must be addressed is not whom to blame or ask responsibility to, but to ask what the problem was with an attentive mind and to scrutinize every safety measure in the country to prevent any occurrence that will draw a similarity with the Itaewon Stampede. - Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Diamond Industry - It Is Time To Be Ethical
Business November 24, 2023 at 6:10:23 PM 00 °c Log In Business Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Diamond Industry - It Is Time To Be Ethical Business 2023/11/12 Share Yeounseo Kim Diamonds Are Covered With Blood Have you ever heard of the word “Blood Diamond”? It is a common term used between diamond fans because conventional diamonds usually involve the exploitation of laborers in hazardous working conditions. This problem causes conflict regarding the value of diamonds and the financial power that dominates the mining industry. People may look for its breathtaking beauty, but there are various ethical conflicts surrounding the diamond industry where businesses receive tremendous outrage from their customers. Still, some industries strive to behave responsibly and find an alternative method to keep both the business and the customers fulfilled. How Are Diamond Businesses Striving To Become Socially Responsible? In response to the protests from customers about the cruelty behind diamond mining, jewelry companies are striving to find alternatives that have similar or better quality than conventional diamonds to appeal to the existing customer base. Currently, there are two well-known alternatives for diamonds: moissanite and lab-grown diamonds. Moissanite is not an actual diamond but is a naturally occurring gemstone from meteorites that landed on Earth. Despite originating from outer space, diamond checkers, a specific tool that jewelry experts use to detect diamonds, cannot differentiate real diamonds and moissanite. As a result, moissanite is a popular substitution for diamonds among customers. Lab-grown diamonds, like their name, are created in science laboratories by applying high pressure to what scientists call “diamond seeds”. Although it takes a few weeks to produce, it is an ethical way of gaining diamonds without exploiting workers and violating ethical issues. One well-known example that produced products using lab-grown diamonds is Lloyd, a European jewelry company founded in 1990. Lloyd has created a series of jewelry collections named “L-DIAMOND LINE”, with its products priced under $2,000, which is comparatively cheaper than naturally occurring diamonds and looks the same. Benefits Of Ethical Diamonds Jewelry businesses that strive to be responsible may gain benefits for their ethical actions. First, brands that refrain from using “Bloody Diamonds” and choose lab-grown or moissanite diamonds market ethical and kind brand image that care about workers’ rights and not just greedily value money. In addition, this will increase the customer loyalty of such brands, for the customers’ money spent to those ethical businesses would be used for further product development and maintaining ethical unique selling points, not for exploiting people. Second, both moissanite and lab-grown diamonds are significantly more affordable than typical diamonds. While natural diamonds are priced about up to $12,000, these alternatives are priced up to $6,000, about 50% cheaper. Furthermore, lab-grown diamonds are capable of being produced in a wide variety of colors on a mass scale. This is an excellent differentiation that makes businesses with lab-grown diamond products competitive than businesses that only sell natural diamonds. Diamonds are financially burdensome for those who want to purchase them, where it is highly likely for the customers to buy a plain and common white diamond that is thought to be “original”, even if their favorite color is pink, blue, or yellow. This does not fully satisfy customers' needs after purchasing. On the contrary, because lab-grown diamonds are cheaper and come in diverse colors, customers are able to buy multiple versions of the diamond to enjoy without feeling any regrets. This would lead to increase in sales as well as the number of returning customers, which would strengthen the market share as well as brand awareness. Third, both moissanite and lab-grown diamonds have noticeably higher profit margins than real diamonds. While natural diamonds have a profit margin of up to 15%, these alternatives have a high profit margin of about 40%. This is truly beneficial for businesses whose primary aim is to raise profit and become successful. - Vox’s Documentary “Do I Want Kids?” Aims to Find a Perfect Time for Having Children
Opinion Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Sieeun Rhee 2023/04/23 4 Vox’s documentary “Do I Want Kids?” discusses the different factors that impact a person’s, especially a woman’s, decision to have children based on interpreting various types of statistical data that helps the audience understand how having children will affect their lives, healths, and careers. It opens a new, more personal window to approaching the recent low fertility rate crisis by embracing the complex nature of the question “Do I want kids?”, successfully achieving its intended purpose of informing the audience of the various implications of having children using an appropriate blend of data and evaluation. The documentary begins with short interview clips of heterosexual and LGBTQIA+ adults with the host, where the interviewees each talk about their decision to have or not have children. While the majority of them say that they are happy with their final decisions and current lives, some of them say they are not. These diverse perspectives effectively illustrate that the question of having children can be a dilemma and that the decision-making process is unique to each individual based on their personal values and beliefs. What makes Vox’s documentary effective is its use of statistical data that is unfamiliar to the general audience. For example, the host introduces the “happiness gap” data, which shows that in many countries, including the U.S., people with children are generally unhappier than people without, and an expert discusses the possible causes of this trend. The “happiness gap” data is not common knowledge among the general public and provides a rather shocking insight for childless adults into the world of parenting. For the purpose of informing, using facts is a compelling way to allow the audience a more thorough understanding of what it might be like to be a parent – especially for non-parents since they lack the experience. However as the hosts evaluate the significance of the data presented, the documentary loses its objectivity, making it seem like Vox is trying to discourage people from having children. This undermines the main objective of the documentary because instead of informing the audience with unbiased information, the hosts’ evaluation of the data puts having children in a negative light. After discussing the career data, showing how having children greatly impacts a female spouse’s earnings, the host, Cleo Abram, says, “...the fertility data tells you that [it is] probably the safer choice to have kids on the earlier side, and the career data implies you might take less of a hit if you have kids later, which is a little frustrating,” leaving the audience to wonder, “then is it better to not have kids at all?”. Additionally, the documentary fails to address the low fertility rate crisis as a major social issue or develop concern and awareness over it. Approaching the parenting dilemma strictly as a personal matter, the documentary does not discuss the devastating consequences that the low fertility rate crisis can have on societies around the world. To a large extent, however, the data presented in the documentary is accurate as they are discussed by experts in the field and allows the audience to realize why fertility rates are crashing: data reveals that parents are generally unhappier and earn less, so it makes sense that no one wants to have kids. The overall structure and information in the documentary allow it to successfully inform the audience of the various implications of having a child and hopefully help them in their own decision-making process. - India’s enthroning from China: The Next Emerging Economic Powerhouse
Economics November 24, 2023 at 6:10:09 PM 00 °c Log In Economics India’s enthroning from China: The Next Emerging Economic Powerhouse Economics 2023/11/12 Share Chaeeun Lee (Jessica) April 2023 marks a timeline in global society where the global order of two Asian countries shifted massively. India has surpassed China in its total estimated population, taking the crown for the most populous country in the world. China’s eventual decline in population growth has been documented ever since the “one-child-policy” of the 1980s that restricted Chinese couples from having more than one child. The policy, applied in an effort to grow China’s economy, drastically reduced the country’s birth rates. This trend has remained even after the abolishment of the policy, with the birth rate continuing to plunge with 1.2 babies per woman in 2022, while the elderly population swelled. (VOA News) Meanwhile, India’s population has met its all-time-high, because in contrast to the steady decline of birth rates, the South Asian country’s fertility rates reached replacement levels of over 2, meaning its population rate is sustained.(NPR) What this actually means for the two highest populated countries is that one is expecting an emerging labor superforce, while the latter grapples with a weakening one. The ramifications of this demographic change, however, extends above numeral rankings. Previously, as China had the largest number of working middle-aged demographics, it was the largest contributor to the global markets. For the labor market, numerous foreign firms depended on Chinese labor to manufacture their goods, while also a pool of consumers purchased imported goods from abroad. Moreover, China has embedded itself deeply into the global supply chain through its inexpensive rural workforce. As the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated, a cut off from China’s labor-based manufacturing led to a shortage of goods such as autochips for automobiles, akin to a “famine”. (The Wall Street Journal) Thus, a decrease in China's cheap labor will lead to certain products being more expensive. India’s ascent as the world’s largest workforce, however, will present a mostly distinct scenario from China’s. As their workforce is young, thriving and educated, making it unable to directly substitute China's cheap manufacturing force. India is expected to keep its economy growing, with an active working population, as shown by a leaping 7.2% growth from 2022-3.(PIB) This economic superpower will allow them to play a more critical role in global affairs. Thus, as India affirms its status as the next economic powerhouse, it is expected to gain the capacity to influence international agendas, diplomatic agreements, and contribute to the economy’s dynamics with its sheer size of the workforce. signify a pivotal moment in global dynamics, with India surpassing China as the world's most populous country. The consequences of China's long-standing one-child policy are evident in its declining population growth, impacting its labor force and global economic contributions. Meanwhile, India's burgeoning population, characterized by youth, vitality, and education, positions it as a distinct economic powerhouse, poised to exert influence on international affairs and contribute significantly to the global economy in the years to come. To conclude, the coming years will signify a pivotal change in global dynamics, as China’s cheap workforce dwindles, directly contributing to the increase in prices and affordability of vital manufactured products. Meanwhile India’s rise as the next major workforce will mark a change in global economics dynamics, being the next decision-maker for foreign markets. - The Decline of Luxury Brands | The Robinson Review
Weekdays, Month Day, Year 00 °c Log In Economics The Decline of Luxury Brands Economics November 22, 2024 at 3:05:06 PM Share Juan Lim LVMH’s CEO, Bernard Arnault, dropped from first to fifth in the ranking of the world’s richest people in September 2024. As the world’s largest luxury goods company, LVMH owns prestigious brands such as Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Celine, Kenzo, and Givenchy. Arnault’s decline in wealth stemmed from a 20% drop in LVMH’s stock price, reducing his net worth to $54 billion. After peaking in March 2024, LVMH’s stock prices fell, primarily due to declining revenue in its wine division. This trend is not exclusive to LVMH. Burberry, the British luxury fashion house, experienced a 70% drop in its stock price after announcing a 30% decline in annual revenue. As a result, Burberry was removed from the U.K.’s FTSE 100 (Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index) and is considering job cuts. Similarly, Kering, the world’s second-largest luxury goods company—home to brands like Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, and Balenciaga—also faced a 70% stock price drop. One major cause of these revenue declines is China’s economic recession. China accounts for one-third of the world's luxury goods sales, but the country’s stagnating growth rate—compounded by falling real estate prices and high unemployment rates—has significantly weakened the Chinese consumer’s purchasing power. Another factor is the rapid price increase for luxury goods since 2019. In response to growing demand, European brands have raised prices by more than 50%. For popular products, the hikes were even steeper, for instance, the price of Channel’s Classic Medium Flap Bag soared by 90%. These increases have alienated middle-class consumers, who are the primary target customers for these brands, rather than the upper class. Luxury brands that cater exclusively to the upper class, such as Ferrari, Hermès, and Prada, remain unaffected by these trends. Their resilience underscores the role of the middle class’s declining purchasing power as the main driver of revenue decreases for mid-tier luxury brands. Additionally, controversy over production costs has tarnished the image of some luxury products. Dior, for instance, faced allegations in an Italian court for worker exploitation, with claims that one of its products—retailing at €2600 —had a production cost of just €53. To adapt, some luxury brands are slowly reducing prices. Burberry cut the price of the Knight handbag by 22%, and Yves Saint Laurent lowered the price of its Loulou bag by 10%. Another emerging strategy is the production of cheaper mini-handbags. If you are considering purchasing a luxury product, it might be worth waiting—prices could continue to drop. - Changes in world order and economy caused by surpassing China by India in population
Science November 24, 2023 at 6:06:36 PM 00 °c Log In Science Changes in world order and economy caused by surpassing China by India in population Science 2023/11/12 Share Yuju Jang Recently, India overtook China as the world’s most populous country. India’s population has been showing an upward trend for quite a long time, while China’s population has shown a downward trajectory for a few decades. As India's population grows, factors such as investing in health, education for new children, and the well-being of older people have become essential. This affects the money that flows inside the country, changing the sources money will be used in. Most importantly, the Indian population will bring several changes to world order and the economy. In the field of world trade systems, as India surpassed China due to increased population, it could lead India to become a center of international trade negotiations and meetings, affecting the global trading system. With this increased economic power, the Indian economy will be much more robust and significant, especially for the consumer market. This enlarged consumer market would appeal to numerous companies worldwide, who are seeking chances to grow themselves in India’s large economic markets. This influx of foreign corporations could make the Indian economy stronger and lead it to play an even more significant role in global economic policies and international organizations. Also, when investors look for opportunities in many countries, they tend to consider market size as important. Therefore, India’s immense population and growing industries would attract many investors from all around the world and influence global capital flows. So, the global capital flows would lead to India rather than China. This would strengthen India and attract multinational corporations, not only in economics but also in other fields. Surpassing China would lead many more countries and global businesses to expand or start their operations in India as they want to make space for new appealing sites. Hence, the change in population ranking from China to India would affect the world economy by reshaping global economics, trading systems, and more. This is just an assumption of what changes could be made, but it can certainly become true by shaping global economies. 1 Works Cited > News Robinson Review Favorites A Review of Alternative Bottleless Water Ooho Dongha Kim Three Reasons Why the U.S. Shot Down the Chinese Spy Balloon Seunghyeon Lee How Truly Significant Is the Collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank on the U.S. Economy? - Book Review: Children of Dune
Opinion Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Hyundo Jung 2023/03/11 3 Despite being one of the oldest scientific series, The Dune is one of the most complicated novel series that I have ever read. The character and story are complex, but the message is so ambiguous and mysterious at the same time. After reading the novel, I asked why Frank Herbert wrote this novel series and what message he intended. The idea of time (past, present, future), life, and religion in the Dune series were intertwined. As I wanted many readers to read the book itself and to read a summary of the book, I planned to write my book review based on the question and my interpretation of the Dune series. The question that I asked myself was “What did Frank Herbert want me to learn?” The first concept that I analyzed after reading the Dune series was time and reality. The Dune series takes place in the distant future. At the planet Dune, the spices allow people to see an illusion that is interpreted as one of many possible futures. Paul Atreides and Leto Atreides II are surrounded by constant illusions in life. When someone asks how understanding and being knowledgeable about the future can be miserable, Paul tells them that his life no longer has a purpose, understanding his inevitable end and progress. Although this may not be the main message that Frank Herbert intended, this idea was really awakening for me. For a high school student, it is always typical to become anxious about the future when one would strongly desire to know my future. However, Frank Herbert implies that knowing the future will make every moment of the present and past meaningless as one knows their future is immutable. Therefore, Frank Herbert’s novel series taught me to focus on the present; he wishes the reader to understand how moments that we live by are unique and special. Dune is a future society of humanity. However, ironically, everything seems so antique and corresponds with the past civilization of humanity. The people are obsessed with Muad'dib and religion. The fact that spices found in Dune (although used for space traveling) somewhat resemble the spice that has been a center of commerce in the Middle age. By portraying the irony in the future, Frank Herbert tries to inform the readers how humanity can’t progress further simply by developing technologies; he argues that humanity will only deteriorate and cycle back to the past with current ideals. This is the reason why the Dune series is so complicated and powerful. It is not a simple SF or fantasy novel that readers can read for pleasure. It questions the past, present, and future of humanity. Frank Herbert does not end his novel with an appealing or cliché ending. The unresolved, questioning ending of the novel causes the reader to look back and front of humanity, to find the solution that can lead to a better future for humanity. Here I would be making a controversial comment. Personally, the Dune series was more enjoyable than the Harry Potter series. Just for sure, I have no intention to criticize or dishonor the achievements of the Harry Potter series. However, I believe the Dune Series would be more acknowledged by people and students because it is not a simple science fiction but a novel that questions the indeterminate history of humanity. The Dune series is being filmed and the second sequel is being released on November 3, 2023. If you are not still persuaded by my review, watch Part 1 of Dune in the movie which was released in 2021. After the film, you would be shouting “Atreides!” and find yourself buying the entire novel series as I did. - What are North Korea’s Political and Economic Goals for 2024, and How Will This Affect Its Current Relationships with South Korea and Russia?
Economics Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Economics What are North Korea’s Political and Economic Goals for 2024, and How Will This Affect Its Current Relationships with South Korea and Russia? Economics 01/21/2024 Share Celine Park North Korea’s ongoing economic strain due to UN sanctions has been exacerbated by the country’s weak economy following the Covid outbreak. It is anticipated that North Korea will continue to face severe food shortages, famine, and other economic hardships in 2024. Resolving these humanitarian issues has become one of the country’s prior goals for the year. Politically, the country is expected to display increased hostility in its interactions with other countries throughout the year, heightening international relationships. Kim has constantly turned down meeting requests from Biden while significantly increasing the number of tests conducted since 2021 – surpassing the figures recorded under the previous US administration. Experts predict that North Korea would likely escalate provocations towards Washington, especially as the US prepares for its presidential elections scheduled in November. It is predicted that this means maintaining or intensifying its military pressure campaign on both South Korea and America. Kim’s recent statement that the South is their “primary foe” and that unification with them is impossible underscores this deteriorating relationship and implies that the implementation of hardline policies would persist until the end of the election. To determine the long-term relationships between North Korea, South Korea, and the U.S., the election outcome would be a pivotal factor to consider. A Trump victory could potentially result in a decrease in provocations towards Washington. However, it may intensify the South Korean discussions of obtaining nuclear weapons to confront the North. On the other hand, North Korea’s relations with Russia is seeing an optimistic turn. In exchange for North Korea’s military assistance to support Russia’s position in the Ukraine War, it is anticipated that Russia would provide North Korea with cheap or free oil, gas, and grain, contributing to improving the country’s falling economy and resolving the aforementioned humanitarian issues. In summary, North Korea’s economic and political goals for 2024 are poised to significantly affect the country’s relationships with South Korea and Russia.
