  • Tel Aviv Witnesses Massive Demonstration Against Netanyahu: Implications for Israel's Economy and Business Landscape

Monthly Edition Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Hyunuk Bang, Soobin Jang, Harry Jung, Seunghyeon Lee, Jisoo Moon, Jaehun Oh, Chanseo Rue, Hwarim Ryoo, Wonjun Son 2023/03/11 2 A huge demonstration took place in the streets of Tel Aviv over the weekend. About 160,000 protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the government, which brought significant uncertainty for the plight of Israel’s political landscape. Central to his fight is Benjamin Netanyahu, who was successfully re-elected as a prime minister of Israel, leading to several changes to the state. Israel citizen’s current point of dissatisfaction about Netanyahu is pinpointed on his recent action of taking away power from the judicial branch of Israel. Many citizens believe Netanyahu’s action is a threat to democracy and as Ronen Hoffman, who has researched Israel's foreign policy under Benjamin Netanyahu, characterized, “almost entirely focused on attempts to please his political base to ensure his political survival”, while also hugely influencing the state’s economy and business. Netanyahu’s policies have a substantial impact on Israel’s businesses. For instance, he has taken a hardline stance on foreign workers, asserting, "We founded a Jewish and democratic state, and we can't let it turn into a foreign workers' state." Yet, the challenge with this stance is that foreign workers constitute a significant part of various Israeli businesses: According to the statistics from 2016, there were around a hundred thousand foreigners who are employed in Israel’s industry, mostly working in simple labor industries such as construction and agriculture–industries most Israeli citizens are reluctant to work. If Netanyahu’s action of limiting democracy and promoting conservatism continues, Israel will likely confront the heavy loss of foreign workers, resulting in a shortage of manpower for domestic companies. Since the circumstance is deteriorating with more protesters, establishing new companies and maintaining the valuable companies are becoming more complex. Deportation of foreign workers is causing Israeli citizens to struggle at establishing new companies because they might not have enough workers. Challenging themselves through the unstable condition of the economy is not going to happen easily. “Given the atmosphere now, it’s almost irresponsible to start a company,” said Yanki Margalit, a veteran entrepreneur. Also, the risk of an unemployment crisis for companies that already employ many foreign workers will provoke the employees to move their companies to other countries. The rampant judicial reform by Netanyahu can not only deteriorate the Israeli’s business circumstances, but also the state’s economy. The CEO of Marketvector remarked, “you can’t separate Israel’s unicorns and startups and scale-ups from the equity market. As funding slows, we’ll see the impact on the stock market, and that’s happening now.” As Israel imposes the contentious foreign policy, many predict that such policy is and will have a negative impact on Israel's profile, as the country encounters incessant volatility both politically, socially, and economically. The ravage of Israel’s credibility will stagger its reliance towards other countries. According to CNBC, the recent decline in Israel’s national profile is increasing the cost of loans and hindering the fundraising from investments from the institutions in the United States, Europe, and others, which Israel tremendously relies upon. Economist Eckstein commented, “17% of Israeli production, 11% of the labor force, are bonded in research and development activity in the high tech sector, and all of this is financed by venture capital that comes from abroad, almost 90% of this,” underscoring how reliant Israel is towards the foreign investment for the most crucial field in country’s economy. The contraction of foreign investment due to recent volatility will eventually wreak havoc towards the country’s economy. Another crucial aspect in Israel is its currency against U.S. dollars. After the declaration of reform and the ensuing protests, the value of shekel - Israel’s currency - plummeted 10% from the value before the reform. That will eventually hurt prominent parts of Israel’s economy such as real estate, as companies and individual citizens move their money into U.S. dollars or other currencies. As the economy stumbles, Israel's stock market is also plunging. Right after judicial reform, the TA-125 index has decreased nearly 4%. TA-125 index is an important indicator of Israel’s prominent industries’ stock. Therefore, decline in this index represents that Israel’s major stocks are also declining and losing their momentum. As a real life example, Mobileye Global’s stock has drastically fallen from 47,000 to 41,000, in mid-february. A total of 12.8% decrease in this major technology company implies that recent reform is wreaking havoc to Israel’s economy. “The only thing this government cares about is crushing Israeli democracy,” opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid quoted in the CNN interview. In the tenth consecutive week of protests, half a million Israelis–5% of Israel’s population–took to the streets to continue protesting against Netanyahu. • June Huh’s Fields Medal and Persisting Questions Toward Korean Education

Opinion Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Yechan Kim 2022/07/21 2 While Professor June Huh of Princeton University became the first South Korean to receive the Fields Medal, Korean education has been questioned more of its practicality. June Huh's accolade will be marked in South Korea's history but may contribute to the rising skepticism toward Korea's education system. June Huh is a mathematician and a professor at Princeton University. He was raised in Korea during his adolescence and attended the country's top university, Seoul National University. Although he is recognized today as a pioneer in mathematics, he did not receive the same attention during his early ages. However, his talents started to reach their full potential through his meeting with Heisuke Hironaka, a Japanese Fields Medal recipient. Heisuke became a mentor for June, as June Huh learned from the iconic figure via his personal assistance experience during his undergraduate years. However, when June Huh applied to various American Universities after graduation, he was rejected by most. Thus, he started out his academic life in America through his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2011, to eventually finishing his degree at Michigan University in 2014. He then took the position of professor at Stanford University, where after a few years he decided to move to Princeton University. Through his proof of the 'Read's Conjecture', June Huh was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022, becoming the first-ever South Korean to receive such honor. As June Huh's pioneer in the field of Mathematics was marked in the history of South Korea, it also prompted critical questions about Korean education and its practicality. South Korea's education is widely known to be one of the most intense and demanding curriculums in the world, as students are required to take the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) in their graduating year. The test is approximately 6 hours, which is twice the amount of time compared to the U.S SAT. The curriculums put an emphasis on raw testing scores above all and have highly competitive environments with class rankings. The content is also focused on solving problems rather than comprehension and application, leading to the failure to educate students with practical knowledge. While it cannot be denied that June Huh was a student in the South Korean education curriculum, he was an aberration of all the students, as he constantly questioned the progress of problem-solving, and meticulously tried to learn the theoretical aspects of math. Many view this as his recipe to success, while also questioning the Korean education system. As an international student planning to apply to universities in the U.S, I feel that both the education systems of South Korea and the U.S have their own strengths and weaknesses. However, the experience of being a South Korean public school student is highly stressful and covers areas that limit students' abilities to explore their knowledge and dreams. I believe the consequences of not being able to experience the freedom of youth by dreaming and exploring new areas are certainly deleterious to the student's experience of adolescents. There certainly needs to be a revision to this kind of restricting education system, to ensure the bright future of young generations in the country, and to help them find their true passion during the years of primary and secondary school education. • Why We Are Startled by Jump Scares: A Neuroscientific Approach

Science Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Why We Are Startled by Jump Scares: A Neuroscientific Approach Science 0 Summer, the season of adrenaline, approaches. In order to relieve heat, people watch horror movies and special TV programs that incorporate scary elements. One of the essentials–may be clichés–of horror is the jump scare, a technique to make a sudden appearance of a shocking image, often with a burst of loud music, which is used after raising the audience’s tension to the extreme and focusing them on the scene. But why are we startled and scared by such jump scares? And why is the jump scare effective? While watching a horror movie, we usually remain suspicious and anxious about when and where a scary thing would pop up. This is because of the amygdala, which plays a significant role in fear learning and memory in our brain. We have an intrinsic fear of certain situations such as a dark atmosphere, and horror movies effectively utilize such elements in particular, which stimulate our amygdala. When the amygdala gets excited, it stimulates the hypothalamus, which brings out the response of our bodies to fear. Thereby our pupils enlarge and our hearts beat faster, as a response to fear from the horror movie. Before a jump scare crops up, we are unwittingly focusing on the scene. This is called overt attention, meaning that you move your gaze according to the movement of an object and focus on it. The reason why we concentrate on something is that hormones named norepinephrine are synthesized in our brains. The region called the locus coeruleus, or ‘blue spot’, in our brainstems is in charge of physiological phenomena like stress and fear. Here norepinephrines are constantly synthesized, which makes us pay close attention to the movie scene. The main reason why we startle due to the jump scare is that our bodies immediately have a motor response to a sudden stimulus, especially to loud noise. Our bodies go into a defensive posture, regarding the jump scare as an external threat that attempts to hurt our bodies. Once an external stimulus is delivered into our bodies, the sympathetic nervous system secretes epinephrine, a stress hormone, which helps activate our body’s fight-or-flight response, such as raising our heart rate and muscle tension. Overall, our bodies, which have been concentrating on the movie screen through the secretion of norepinephrine from the blue spot, activate the amygdala regarding external stimuli like jump scare as threats. Simultaneously, our bodies start to respond to fear, attributing to the stimulation of the hypothalamus, such as our heart beating faster and our pupils dilating. Furthermore, our bodies react to stress in a way by getting startled, along with the secretion of epinephrine from the sympathetic nervous system. In conclusion, jump scares in horror movies are effective because they tap into our innate fear response system, which includes the amygdala, the hypothalamus, and the sympathetic nervous system. Our bodies react to sudden stimuli and loud noises as if they are external threats, leading to a defensive posture and the secretion of stress hormones. Understanding the science behind our fear response can help us appreciate the effectiveness of horror movies and why we enjoy being scared, even though it may seem counterintuitive. 2023/04/23 Share Seun Kim Works Cited > News Science Robinson Review Favorites A Review of Alternative Bottleless Water Ooho Dongha Kim Three Reasons Why the U.S. Shot Down the Chinese Spy Balloon Seunghyeon Lee How Truly Significant Is the Collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank on the U.S. Economy? • Donald Trump & Business - Will He Succeed Again?

Monthly Edition: January Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Monthly Edition: January Donald Trump & Business - Will He Succeed Again? Monthly Edition: January 01/21/2024 Share Yeounseo Kim A new year has begun, and this year of 2024 is when the presidential election of the United States is being held. While there are two major presidential candidates, Biden and Trump, the majority are expecting Trump to be elected, despite the conflicts he has caused to the whole society before he had to hand over the presidential role to Biden, ultimately resulting in some states like Maine to remove him from the ballot. Recognizing the high chances of Donald Trump returning as a president of the United States, this article will evaluate Trump’s ability to improve domestic businesses back in 2017 to 2021. A positive aspect that Trump successfully managed is the unemployment rate and job growth. His predecessor, Obama, built a strong economic basis for the US, despite the harsh financial conditions around the globe. With such a rigid basis, Trump was able to further improve the business aspects of the nation, providing increased job opportunities and hence lowering the unemployment rate. However, Trump’s negative effect towards business growth should also be noticed. Back in 2019, Trump has failed to manage the spread of COVID-19, with him explicitly explaining to his supporters that they do not have to wear masks. This not only increased the number of patients exposed to COVID-19, but also impacted the operation of countless businesses, limiting them in the number of workers needed for daily operations. With that being said, Trump’s ability to manage the economy, as well as misleading leadership styles, should be recognized by all US citizens, so that they can vote for the best candidate who would improve society. • The U.K. Is Getting Closer to Its Sunset

Economics Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Justin Lim 2023/02/05 0 "The empire on which the sun never sets" was the phrase used to describe the Colonial British Empire, which was the largest empire in history. It encompassed vast territories across Africa, Europe, America, and Oceania, allowing the British Empire to gain immense wealth from the various resources acquired from its colonies. However, the U.K. has passed its prime, and the country’s economy is currently in crisis. On February 1st, approximately half a million workers across the U.K. initiated strikes with the message to halt the attacks on strikes and begin negotiating with the unions regarding public sector pay. This strike was primarily caused by the unbelievable inflation rate of 10.5%, which is even higher than the rate during the financial crisis of 2008. Due to their inability to handle the inflation with their current income, U.K. citizens had no alternative but to strike. Comparing this rate to 6.5% of the U.S. and 5.2% of Korea, the economic impacts on the lives of citizens are likely to be severe. Governments of developed countries are concerned by the prospect of the IMF, the International Monetary Fund that the economic growth rate in 2023 will drop to nearly 1%, which is not enough to catch up with the skyrocketing inflation rate. However, the situation in the U.K. is worse than any other country, as it is the only developed country in the world expected to show a negative growth of -0.6%, which is even lower than a country at war - Russia, with 0.3%. Many economists believe that the primary cause of the decline in the U.K.'s economy is Brexit. Brexit was the decision of the U.K. to leave the EU for several reasons such as opening new markets outside of Europe, stopping illegal refugees from the Middle East, and not having to pay the EU budget contribution fee. The government expected to handle the economic problems caused by the departure and hoped to provide better public welfare using the contribution fee that does not have to be paid anymore. However, the economic issues caused by this decision were worse than expected. When Brexit was officially decided, 32% of the U.K.'s exports were to EU countries like Germany, France, Netherlands, and Ireland. This dropped when the U.K. officially left the union, significantly impacting the trade balance. Although the government tried to increase trade with other countries like Australia, added on with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not enough to remedy the damage. There were indirect effects as well. The U.K. used to be the optimal country for global corporations to target the European market and base their business on various advantages such as using English, being part of the EU, and being the center of finance. This changed when Brexit was initiated as there were no more advantages to convince companies to stay in the U.K.. The effect of this decision is clearly shown in Ireland's economy. Ireland, a country that uses English and has stayed in the EU after the U.K.'s departure, replaced the U.K.'s position as the hub of finance. After Brexit, the GDP per capita of Ireland, which used to be similar to the U.K., increased rapidly and reached $100,000. Compared to $47,000 in the U.K., the difference is massive. As a result of Ireland's efforts to take over companies from the U.K. with policies such as decreasing corporate taxes, over 1,000 international companies currently have their headquarters in Ireland. The political situation in the U.K. is in turmoil. Within less than a year, the country saw two changes in the Prime Minister, with Boris Johnson resigning on September 6th, 2022, followed by Liz Truss's resignation on October 25th, 2022. Rishi Sunak succeeded her as the new Prime Minister. It is worth noting that Liz Truss's resignation was due to her rapid implementation of economic reforms, which led to more problems. The future of the U.K.'s economy seems gloomy. These chain reactions were among the reasons that prompted half a million workers across the U.K. to initiate a strike on February 1st. If this trend continues, citizens will face difficulties, particularly in the current global recession. Therefore, all eyes are on Rishi Sunak, hoping that he can revive the struggling economy of the U.K. Economics Trending on Robinson Review As Economic Growth Slows, Retail Sales in March Decreases Joe Biden's Signing of the Respect for Marriage Act Becomes A Turning Point in the Fight for LGBTQ+ Right Vaseline on Your Face? • A Closer Look on the Impact of Interest Rates on the Korean Real Estate Market

Economics Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Sangwon Jeong 2023/02/05 0 The recent changes in interest rates led by The Bank of Korea On 2023 January 13, The Bank of Korea reported that they decided to raise the interest rates by 0.25%. This is the first seven consecutive increases in history, and the Monetary Policy Board has raised the benchmark interest rate successively since April last year. It seems to consider the rising consumer price index of 5% and the base rate gap with the U.S., which has widened to 1.25 percentage points. In other words, this contractionary fiscal policy is intended to tackle the soaring inflation rate. However, it also collapsed another important economic market at the same time – the real estate market. Things happening in the real estate market in Korea According to a result of analyzing the court registration information plaza by real estate information provider Economic ManLab, a total of 166,634 buyers purchased collective buildings for the first time in their lives in the Seoul metropolitan area (Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon) in 2022. This is the smallest number since the statistics began to be compiled in 2010. Compared to 2021 (302,261), it plunged 46.9%. Last year, 38,726 buyers of the first collective building in Seoul were found. Gyeonggi Province had 95,671 people and Incheon had 26,237. In short, fewer people are looking for a new house. Subsequently, this reduced demand for houses has decreased house prices a lot. According to the National Housing Price Trend Survey for December 2022, released by the Korea Real Estate Agency on the 16th, the monthly change in housing prices in Seoul was -1.96%, a decrease from the previous month (-1.34%). This figure exceeded -1.39% in December 2008, the most significant drop ever. The fall in Seoul last month was -1.34%, the highest since the financial crisis, but it exceeded the financial crisis level in a month. This is the most significant drop since the Korea Real Estate Agency compiled related statistics in December 2003. The association between increased interest rates and decreased house prices The reason behind the falling house prices lies in the increased interest rates. When people buy a new house, they are likely to borrow from banks to pay for the high house price they cannot afford without loans. However, if the interest rates rise, the cost of loans rises. Therefore, people are discouraged from borrowing and stop looking for a new house. As a result, the demand for houses falls, contributing to the general decrease in house prices. Possible problems Falling house prices can incur more serious economic inequalities than we think. First of all, some people see buying a house as an investment. They do this by borrowing a lot of money. However, if house prices fall, they cannot earn any profits from their investment, unable to pay back their debt. Furthermore, if this problem spreads, many banks will go bankrupt because they can’t receive any interest. This phenomenon is what happened in 2008, known as the Great Recession. On the other hand, the collapse of house prices may allow some low-income people to buy better houses. By doing so, they will be able to improve their standard of living and develop the overall economy. This way, falling house prices have both advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, house prices must be appropriately set. • Doomsday Is Coming: ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Magazine Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Doomsday Is Coming: ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Magazine 0 ChatGPT is an AI learning algorithm developed by OpenAI, sponsored by Microsoft. More specifically, it is generative artificial intelligence that is capable of not only providing information but also interacting with the user organically through conversations. Additionally, it assists them in various fields such as coding, writing emails, or even creating content for companies. Its revolutionary aspect lies in its ability to absorb and learn large amounts of data and then utilize that information to synthesize information or other content–previously thought to be too “creative” or complex for AI to reproduce–that is requested by the user. Technology is developed by humans and subsequently angled to benefit humans. There are a number of factors that contribute to people’s lives. ChatGPT may be utilized as a tool for students and educators, as the novel device is capable of answering inquiries based on known facts, and only on confirmed facts. ChatGPT allows learners to quickly review texts using the summarization command. ChatGPT is constantly improving, as the AI is capable of answering questions in 95 different languages. Unlike other AIs of a similar nature, which are only capable of a dozen languages. ChatGPT learns through machine learning, meaning interaction with humans is a learning opportunity for the robotic intellect. This allows ChatGPT to constantly evolve, allowing individuals to consume the service according to their needs. Although ChatGPT has a number of advantages, it also has very clear disadvantages and limitations. For instance, ChatGPT is unable to comprehend complex games or concepts such as chess or wordplay, even if the user explains the concept in detail. Many ChatGPT users around the world have tried to make ChatGPT understand some games, such as chess or wordplay. The AI model said it clearly understood the concept; however, when the user tried to play the game with the model, it was shown that the AI software failed to understand the game's rules. It is also subject to the common limitations of chat AI which is the inability to connect and interact with users. When humans communicate with each other, both individuals can learn and share their emotions. However, one-sided communication between ChatGPT and users keeps ChatGPT from gaining new insights and perspectives. If ChatGPT could only provide an understanding of existing statistics and knowledge, it would be severely limited to generating creative ideas. It would also be limited to recreating the past. Alongside ChatGPT limitations, there are potential threats that might follow. One of ChatGPT’s most impressive capabilities is that it can help certain jobs be done more efficiently while maintaining quality. However, this also means that some jobs might be completely replaceable with ChatGPT. For example, artists who sketch and paint for months can easily be replaced by websites that produce AI-generated art in just a few seconds. Not only in the field of art, but ChatGPT also brings threats to the academic world. With ChatGPT, students no longer have to think on their own, produce original works, or study for an exam. It has been confirmed that over 60% of college students are currently using ChatGPT to complete their assignments. This shows that ChatGPT has already taken over students’ learning opportunities. In addition, the novel AI proved itself capable of passing the bar exam, raising concerns regarding job opportunities. Similar concerns have existed since AI development-the fear of job replacements in the future. Now, as Chat GPT takes an additional step towards proving itself superior to humans, the problem, yet to be solved, remains a mission for developers. Our society is expected to be significantly impacted by ChatGPT in the future as concerns rise. Bill Gates, the CEO of Microsoft, claims that with ChatGPT’s ability to generate optimized responses to various and complex topics, its development could pave the way for more advanced AI systems in the future and alter how humans interact with machines and the internet. Indeed, as ChatGPT gains more knowledge through frequent updates, a wider range of people will receive help from this quick and practical tool. Which might lead to the replacement of physical books and dictionaries, as well as information-related technologies. Moreover, the development of ChatGPT but also diverse AI language models would facilitate access to information, which would increase productivity. However, as aforementioned, there are also potential risks and challenges to consider. Generally, in terms of artificial intelligence, human employment will decline continuously as substitutes are present for human jobs. There certainly will be a risk of one’s privacy being compromised. Above all, to ensure that its impact on the future is positive, the vitality of usingChatGPT in a responsible and ethical manner is highlighted. 2023/11/03 Share Seongmin Choi, Hyundo Jung, Jaeheon Jung, Yeongho Jeong, Gyumin Kim, Hyunseo Kim, Seun Kim, Yechan Kim, Jeongwoo Lee, Yoonseo Lim, Seoa Park Works Cited > News Magazine Robinson Review Favorites A Review of Alternative Bottleless Water Ooho Dongha Kim Three Reasons Why the U.S. Shot Down the Chinese Spy Balloon Seunghyeon Lee How Truly Significant Is the Collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank on the U.S. Economy? • Climate Change and its Economic Impacts

Economics Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Climate Change and its Economic Impacts Economics 0 Climate change is one of the most urgent and pressing global issues facing humanity. Temperatures are continuing to rise, the world is going through rapid weather changes, extreme natural disasters, rising sea levels, numerous diseases, and much more. Even though research on the effect of climate change plays an important role in this status quo, little is known about the significant economic impact of climate change on people around the world. I In fact, various sectors of the economy are affected, such as the agricultural sector, infrastructure, and human health, bringing various difficulties and opportunities for the sectors. Regarding this global issue, this article brings light to the relationship between climate change and economics and addresses the impact on the global economy as a whole. The agriculture industry is the most vulnerable sector to the impacts of climate change as temperature and weather directly affect the production of the product that is sold on the market.. Climate change expose the cropsto storms, droughts, and floods more often, which causes severe damage that can not be solved. Accordingly, agricultural products will have an increase in prices, reduced productivity for workers, and lower margins. Hence, low-income families and developing countries may also go through extreme problems such as food insecurity which can result in malnutrition and famine. As agriculture is a staple consumption related to survival and living, people are concerned about the future of their meals on the table. Likewise, infrastructure also has critical damage by climate change since extreme weather and natural disasters can destroy roads, bridges, and buildings. The accidents hurt numerous innocent people and make costs that will be needed to rebuild and repair the damages. It can also slow workers' production if company buildings collapse and reduce tourist destinations which decrease tourism income. Thus, climate change also impacts human health with various pandemics and diseases, heat, and increasing air pollution. Therefore, workers' productivity will decrease due to health problems that can result in loss of income and active trade in the market. Additionally, healthcare costs will increase which may make it harder for people to get access to services that are affordable. The investments and opportunities of climate change also bring challenges that people will need to face such as reduced political interaction and global trade. When climate change is taken into consideration and countries find ways for eco-friendly activities, their economic development tends to become lower. As numerous governments try to focus on increasing economic growth, they prioritize it over the protection of the environment which accelerates the environmental problem. Nevertheless, climate change brings numerous opportunities for businesses that work on sustainable energy sources, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. These businesses create new job places, increase economic growth, and facilitate trade in the market. Additionally, as these opportunities are aiming to find a solution for climate change, they will be able to reduce and improve the problems that we are facing for a better result in the long term. It also allows people to focus on being prepared for nature’s warnings and disasters which will increase resilience for humanity and allow us to stay safe. Climate change and economics have a close relationship with each other that impacts humanity severely. It brings disastrous consequences and challenges that we must face, but also has opportunities that can increase people’s work. Still, as the effects of climate change are growing, governments and organizations should step aside from economic aspect until they find a sustainable solution to climate change 2023/03/11 Share Siyeon Park Works Cited > News Economics Robinson Review Favorites A Review of Alternative Bottleless Water Ooho Dongha Kim Three Reasons Why the U.S. Shot Down the Chinese Spy Balloon Seunghyeon Lee How Truly Significant Is the Collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank on the U.S. Economy? • How and to what effect has the concept of justice been explored in The Handmaid’s Tale and The Visit? | The Robinson Review

Weekdays, Month Day, Year 00 °c Log In Politics How and to what effect has the concept of justice been explored in The Handmaid’s Tale and The Visit? Politics 03/04/2024 Share Yubin Cho Justice is a common topic of literary works and can be depicted in various perspectives. In the dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale by margaret Atwood and play The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt, readers are introduced to protagonist Offred and Alfred Ill, who are both victims of “justice” that defends the unrighteousness done to them. The Handmaid’s Tale is set in a patriarchal totalitarian regime of Gilead. Women with fertility, including our protagonist Offred, are given the role of Handmaid in which their only job is reproducing for the lowered birth rate. The Visit is set in a dilapidated village Guellen that is suffering from great poverty. Protagonist Ill’s life is threantened as Claire Zachanassian, a millionaire who had came back to Guellen after years to revenge on Ill’s betrayal after their relationship ended up into pregnancy, offers a million dollars for Ill’s death. While the both Atwood and Durrenmatt establishes the topic of justice and its limits, the stories are distinguished by the different use of characters and society show this. In her novel “The Handmaid’s Tale”, Margaret Atwood suggests that justice is subjective by revealing contrasting interpretations of justice between the government of Gilead and Offred. This is most clearly illustrated when Offred observes the bodies of doctors who performed abortions hanging on the Wall “so as many people as possible will have the chance to see them.” From the perspective of Gilead, these men are essentially sinners who have “committed atrocities, and must be made into examples, for the rest.” Their perspective of justice is influenced by their religious beliefs, as Gilead is a Christian fundamentalist theocracy, and considers abortion to be murder. However, this view of justice is questioned by Offred, who notes that “what they did was legal at the time.” Moreover, she notes that “what we are supposed to feel towards these bodies is hatred and scorn,” but that personally, “this isn’t what I feel.” Offred’s frequent flashbacks to the pre-Gilead state suggest that her view of justice is shaped by her upbringing in a more liberal and secular environment. Thus, Atwood effectively illustrates how justice is subjective and may be shaped by people's beliefs or life experiences. Similarly, The Visit also shows the subjective nature of justice by the two contrasting characters, Ill and Zachanassian. Zachanassian’s ultimate goal in coming back to Guellen is to get revenge on Ill by having him killed. When the crowd hears her request, they view it as “savage.” However, from Zachanassian’s perspective, she is actually the victim of previous “miscarriage of justice” when Ill abandoned her. She describes in detail the suffering she endured when she was forced to leave the town in shame, “pregnant with only a short while to go, and the townsfolk sniggering at me.” Therefore, in her mind, getting revenge on Ill is actually an act of justice that will “right the wrong she was done in Guellen.” By revealing and explaining Claire’s understanding of justice thoroughly in Act 1, Durrenmatt establishes a feeling of sympathy for readers, despite the extreme nature of her request. However, as the play proceeds to Act 2, the focus of the play shifts from Claire’s intentions to Ill’s reactions. After learning that people are agreeing to Claire’s deal, Ill hurriedly meets the policeman and demands the arrest of Claire, saying “It’s your duty” to cease violent threats against a villager. However, he receives a firm refusal from the police who claims Ill’s demand is simply “peculiar”. The portrayal of Ill desperately asking for help depicts his fear of Claire's deal and makes readers view Claire as an antagonist and her justice as an obstacle for the protagonist’s safety. Ill saying that his fear is “only natural. Perfectly natural” highlights that justice in his definition is society protecting him from a woman who has attempted to purchase his assassination. The two texts share the form of contrasting two different views on justice and effectively show the subjective nature of justice. However, Atwoods portrays this in The Handmaid’s Tale as individual doubting the definition of justice established by the society. On the other hand, Durrenmatt creates the theme of subjectivity by transferring the focus of the readers from one individual to other, making readers themselves doubt the justice. The Handmaid’s Tale challenges the concept of justice by showing how easily those who are ostensibly in charge of administering justice can be corrupted. Gilead is ruled by an elite group of men that includes the Commander. These men are theoretically in charge of Gilead’s strict laws, which strictly regulate people’s sexual lives and reproductive health. However, Atwood portrays the Commander as an extremely corrupt figure who doesn’t follow the laws that he enforces. This is most clearly illustrated in the scene when the Commander takes Offred to Jezebel, a brothel where many of Gildead’s elite men engage in illegal behavior like enjoying time with prostitutes and drinking. Offred comments that the Commander perhaps has “reached that state of intoxication which power is said to inspire, the state in which you believe you are indispensable and can therefore do anything, absolutely anything you feel like, anything at all.” By this quote, Atwood clearly portrays the Commander as a hypocritical figure and suggests that his power has corrupted him, making him abandon his belief in justice. The Visit portrays justice to be vulnerable to corruption by directly showing how the power of Claire’s wealth influences people to lose their moral conscience and prioritize their greed. Every step of Claire’s revenge is bought with her money. From the start, she ‘buys’ the judge who sentenced her and makes him her butler, and he admits that he accepted this “peculiar career for a man of learning” because “the salary was so fantastic”. Moreover, Claire’s words show her confidence that her wealth can buy her everything. She continuously treats everything -even justice that she wants on Ill- to be buyable simply by money: When asked if she desires justice on Ill, she replies that she “can afford it”. When the mayor claims that “justice can’t be bought” and refuses her offer, Claire replies by saying “Everything can be bought” and leaves shortly after saying “I’ll wait” as if she knows that the villagers will soon accept her deal for money. Moreover, as the play continues, Claire’s assumption that people's sense of justice can be corrupted by greed is proved to be correct. This can be seen when people in the town start buying more and more expensive items on debt, assuming that Ill will be killed and the town will soon be rich. As Ill complains, “The greater the debt, the higher the standard of living. The higher the standard of living, the greater the need to kill me.” This quotation clearly shows how people’s desire for wealth can lead them to abandon their sense of justice and commit murder. Although vulnerable to desire to wealth and can abandon their justice, both texts depicts the theme of pliable justice by showing individuals breaking justice for their own benefits and greed. The act of injustice is rationalized in The Handmaid’s Tale as shown by the oppressive hierarchy system of Gilead. Women with fertility are dehumanized as tools for reproduction rather than as human beings. The act of rape is justified as “Ceremony” for the greater good of the society. This is shown when Aunt Lydia claims that the “sacrifice Handmaids are being expected to make” are “for the generations that come after” and that the situation “will be so much better” for the next generation. Moreover, during the Ceremony, Offred thinks of the quote “Close your eyes and think of England”. Alluding to Queen Victoria’s advice for her daughter to think of the greater good of continuing the generation of England as a monarch rather than focusing on the undesirable sexual approach, Atwoods highlights and shows how Gilead justifies the injustice done on Handmaids by rationalizing it as acts for greater good. The rationlization of injustice is depicted in in similar fashion in The Visit as the act of killing Ill is rationalized as an act for the greater good: the town’s justice. As the villagers are lured by the substantial wealth that can relieve their poverty and unconsciously agree to Claire’s deal, the villagers uses greater good as a convenient excuse. This hypocrisy is most evident towards the play's ending when villagers speaks in unicent that Claire’s offer was accepted unanimously “not for the sake of the money but for the sake of justice and for conscience’s sake for they cannot connive at a crime”. This shows their hypocracy of covering the consequence of their greed as an action for a better, innocent town. The subsequent prayer “deliver our souls from evil and all our most sacred possessions”, employs an allusion to Lord’s prayer implies religious and sacred tone to the villagers’ prayers, further highlighting the ironic rationalization of the murder. Moreover, the chant is repeated because it was not being recorded. The villagers repeating the speech that was meant to be sacred and serious makes them look foolish. Naturally, the readers receive a feeling that whole chant is a scripted, insincere performance for the public. Like this, both texts shows how the excuse of greater good is exploited to justify selfish action of injustice. One crucial difference, however, is that the greater good in The Handmaid’s Tale is the next generation and therefore is forcing sacrifice to victims to indirectly imply the wrongfulness of the society to the readers while The Visit directly shows the insincere environment of claim of justice with source of humor. Using the dystopian novel and play, both Margaret Atwood and Friedrich Durrenmatt communicates the concept of justice by introducing the readers to the subjective nature of justice and how this can make it susceptible to corruption. Furthermore, both texts shows this vulneraility can be mishandled to rationalize acts of injustice. Through observation and analysis, reader can realize the hypocritical and ironical environment of justice in which it is a superficial theme with vulnerability, rather than a superior ideal that people believe that they have achieved. • Unpacking the Biological Response and Coping Mechanisms of the Body to Stressors

Science Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Unpacking the Biological Response and Coping Mechanisms of the Body to Stressors Science 2 What Are Stressors? Stress is an inevitable part of daily life. Everyone encounters it at some point. Stressors are events or situations that are perceived as threatening, ranging from physical or psychological to environmental factors. The body's response to stressors involves complex physiological and psychological mechanisms. This article aims to explore how the body responds to and copes with stressors. How the Body Responds to Stress The body's response to stressors is orchestrated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, activated when the brain perceives a threat or a stressful situation. The hypothalamus releases a corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) into the bloodstream. ACTH, in turn, triggers the release of cortisol from the adrenal gland. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that plays a crucial role in the body's response to stressors. It acts on various organs and tissues to mobilize energy reserves, increase glucose levels in the bloodstream, and suppress non-essential functions such as digestion and the immune system. Cortisol also promotes the breakdown of muscle tissue, leading to the release of amino acids that can be converted into glucose for energy. Chronic stress can lead to dysregulation of the HPA axis, resulting in prolonged cortisol secretion. This can have detrimental effects on the body, including immune system suppression, impaired cognitive function, and increased risk of metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity. Coping Mechanisms The body employs various mechanisms to help restore homeostasis to cope with stressors. One of these mechanisms is the activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which triggers the "fight or flight" response. The SNS releases adrenaline and noradrenaline, which increase heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. This response prepares the body for immediate action and can help individuals deal with acute stressors such as physical danger. Another coping mechanism is the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which promotes relaxation and recovery. The PNS releases acetylcholine, slowing down the heart and breathing rates and promoting digestion and restorative processes such as tissue repair. If we look outside the body, social support has been shown to be a critical coping mechanism for stress. Social support can come from family, friends, or colleagues and can provide emotional, informational, and practical support. Social support has been linked to improved mental health outcomes, better coping abilities, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. Concluding Remarks Stress is an inevitable part of daily life, and the body's response to stressors involves complex physiological and psychological mechanisms. The HPA axis plays a crucial role in the body's response to stress, and cortisol is a key hormone involved in mobilizing energy reserves and suppressing non-essential functions. Chronic stress can dysregulate the HPA axis and have detrimental effects on the body. Coping mechanisms such as the activation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and social support help individuals deal with stressors and restore homeostasis. Understanding the biological response and coping mechanisms of the body to stressors can help individuals develop effective stress management strategies and improve their overall well-being. 2023/04/23 Share Seoyun Lee Works Cited > News Science Robinson Review Favorites A Review of Alternative Bottleless Water Ooho Dongha Kim Three Reasons Why the U.S. Shot Down the Chinese Spy Balloon Seunghyeon Lee How Truly Significant Is the Collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank on the U.S. Economy? • South Korean Entertainment Industry’s Business Strategies

Business Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Works Cited > News Share Soobin Jang, Jisoo Moon, Wonjun Son 2023/03/11 1 Entertainment industry is already one of the fastest growing industries worldwide with an expected annual growth rate of 6.65% and projected market value of 42.54 billion U.S. dollars in 2027, which marks a huge difference from the recent 29.35 billion. The industry contains various sub-contents including music, media, and cartoons. However, due to its characteristics of fast-shifting trends and dependence on consumer’s taste, entertainment companies exhibit a unique form of business strategy that is not seen in other sectors. Originality is an attention grabbing issue that internet users are focusing on. It is a very important and sensitive subject for artists. Every entertainment, even at the same agency, tries to create different and unique images for each performer. People’s attention and regards are the main goals that artists and entertainers live for. They strive to catch the trends to get a unique and because unique characteristics lead to success in today’s society, and some who have overlapping images with another artist, even if it's not on purpose, will buy a doubt from netizens. For example, South Korean influencer Freezia and WonYoung of Kpop group Ive have overlapping impressions on people. Their characteristics, voice, behavior, and styles, etc. are all overlying to each other. So the internet people started to discover who started first and who followed it. This is a problem not only in Korea, but also across the border, and in most cases, it is not clear who followed and who started first. However, there is one representative case that anyone was able to identify the ‘original’. Recently, North Korea introduced a group of musicians who are suspected of copying 2017 South Korea girl group Gfriend’s song “Fingertip”. Social people felt that it was obvious that they copied a South Korean girl group’s song, and started to criticize the musicians through the internet, which resulted in a degradation of their image. Another unique trend in the entertainment industry is the expansionist actions of companies that include active M&As. Recently in Korea, there has been a power struggle between Kakao and Hybe entertainment over the integration of SM, which is another Korean entertainment business. Other major entertainment companies such as Melon, YG, and CJ each formed partnership or alliance with either Hybe and Kakao, escalating the scale of the competition to an unprecedented level in the industry. There are also similar alliances or integrations involving entertainment businesses outside of Korea. For instance, China’s gaming firm Tencent has acquired Riot Games and Supercell, while Disney also purchased Marble and 20th century fox. The influence of Intellectual properties yield in the entertainment industry is the main reason why the sector has so many cases of M&As. Intellectual properties, more commonly known for IPs, are creative creations that frequently take the form of characters and ‘fictional universes’. The more of the IPs that a company possesses means that they could attract more customers. And since having more customers directly correlates with success in the entertainment sector, more and more companies in the industry are utilizing M&A as a strategy to prosper their company. As time passes, the entertainment industries' profit structure is gradually changing. In the past, the entertainment industries clearly aimed to " entertain the users.” They provided interesting services as much as they could. However, nowadays, there are many companies which have developed tremendously. Thus, they are more focused on their profits. Their profit structure had changed from “consumer-friendly” to “producer-friendly.” To be specific, Netflix already shows a move to get rid of a “consumer-friendly” company. They are planning to ban account sharing. Many users worldwide are sharing the account with their friends or families, but they realize that it doesn’t give them enough profit. With the single purpose of gaining more profit, Netflix decided to make an unfavorable change to the users. As society advances and more people seek higher order desires of enjoyment, the entertainment industry has successfully blended from an extravagance to part of our everyday life. However, even though the prospect of the entertainment sector looks fairly promising, people should first consider it from other sectors and try to accurately understand how its businesses function before making a deep dive into the next blue ocean. • Tel Aviv Witnesses Massive Demonstration Against Netanyahu: Implications for Israel's Economy and Business Landscape

Magazine Tuesday, December 23, 2025 00 °c Log In Tel Aviv Witnesses Massive Demonstration Against Netanyahu: Implications for Israel's Economy and Business Landscape Magazine 0 A huge demonstration took place in Tel Aviv streets over the weekend. About 160,000 protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the government, which created significant uncertainty for Israel’s political future. Central to his fight is Benjamin Netanyahu, who was successfully re-elected as prime minister of Israel, leading to several changes to the state. Netanyahu has recently taken away power from Israel’s judiciary, which is causing Israeli citizens dissatisfaction. . Many citizens believe Netanyahu’s action is a threat to democracy. AsRonen Hoffman, who has researched Israel's foreign policy under Benjamin Netanyahu, characterized, “almost entirely focused on attempting to please his political base to ensure his political survival”, while also hugely influencing the state’s economy and business. If Netanyahu’s policy of limiting democracy and promoting conservatism continues, Israel will likely suffer heavy loss of foreign workers, resulting in a shortage of manpower for domestic companies. Since the economic situation is deteriorating with more protesters, establishing new companies and maintaining the valuable companies are becoming more complex. Since foreign workers are being deported, Israeli citizens are having difficulty establishing new companies. Challenging themselves through the economy’s unstable condition is not going to be easy. “Given the atmosphere now, it’s almost irresponsible to start a company,” said Yanki Margalit, a veteran entrepreneur. Moreover, the risk of an unemployment crisis for companies that employ many foreign workers will cause their employees to relocate. The rampant judicial reform by Netanyahu can not only deteriorate Israeli’s business circumstances, but also the state’s economy. The CEO of Marketvector remarked, “You can’t separate Israel’s unicorns, startups and scale-ups from the equity market. As funding slows, we’ll see the impact on the stock market, and that’s happening now.” As Israel imposes a contentious foreign policy, many predict that such policy is and will have a negative impact on Israel's profile, as the country encounters incessant volatility both politically, socially, and economically. The ravage of Israel’s credibility will make it increasingly dependent on other countries. According to CNBC, the recent decline in Israel’s national profile is increasing the cost of loans and hindering the fundraising from investments from the institutions in the United States, Europe, and others, which Israel tremendously relies upon. Economist Eckstein commented, “17% of Israeli production, 11% of the labor force, are bonded in research and development activity in the high tech sector, and all of this is financed by venture capital that comes from abroad, almost 90% of this,” underscoring how reliant Israel is towards foreign investment for the most crucial field in the country’s economy. The contraction of foreign investment due to recent volatility will eventually wreak the country’s economy. Israel’s currency in relation to the U.S. dollar is another crucial aspect. After the reform declaration and the ensuing protests, the value of the shekel - Israel’s currency - plummeted 10% from the value before reform. That will eventually hurt prominent parts of Israel’s economy such as real estate, as companies and individual citizens move their money into U.S. dollars or other currencies. As the economy stumbles, Israel's stock market is also plunging. Israel's prominent industries' stocks are measured by the TA-125 index. But following the Judicial reform, the TA-125 index has decreased nearly 4%. Therefore, the decline in this index represents that Israel’s major stocks are also declining and losing momentum. As a real life example, Mobileye Global’s stock has plunged from 47,000 to 41,000 in mid-February. A total of 12.8% decrease in this major technology company implies that recent reforms are negatively impacting Israel’s economy. “The only thing this government cares about is crushing Israeli democracy,” opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid was quoted in a CNN interview. In the tenth consecutive week of protests, half a million Israelis–5% of Israel’s population–took to the streets to protest against Netanyahu. 2023/03/12 Share Hyunuk Bang, Soobin Jang, Harry Jung, Seunghyeon Lee, Jisoo Moon, Jaehun Oh, Chanseo Rue, Hwarim Ryoo, Wonjun Son Works Cited > News Magazine Robinson Review Favorites A Review of Alternative Bottleless Water Ooho Dongha Kim Three Reasons Why the U.S. Shot Down the Chinese Spy Balloon Seunghyeon Lee How Truly Significant Is the Collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank on the U.S. Economy?
